How to do Image Optimization
We cannot deny the fact that attractive and relevant images make the websites to look good. But everything comes at certain cost. So in this case, images delay the loading time of the web page. As visitors just lack patience, so they close down the website if they see that web page is taking quite enough time to load. So what you need to do! You should not add images to the website? No, rather you should go for photo optimization which would normalize the loading time of the website. Because in an ideal world only, you would see a web designer using high quality images and at the same time, his website is loading too fast. But the real world is different. So how to go about image optimization.
1.Slicing: PSD to HTML (Slicing) plays an important part in web development. With this, we can do image optimization. Computer monitors can only display images at 72dpi (dots per inch). So the first step in photo optimization is to reduce the resolution to 72 dpi. To do this, large images should be sliced into smaller ones, and then put back together. Each piece will be a very small file and together will load in a fraction of the time just as single image file would load.
2.Image Files: You must use GIF or PNG interlaced and JPEG files in almost same frequency instead of sticking to only one. Both of these properties allow the picture to load gradually as first a blurry image that becomes sharper and clearer.
3.Number of Images: Some web designers use image for almost anything and also where it is not required. Obviously, more number of images will slow down the speed of loading. The loading speed of a page is constituted by sum of HTML files and size of embedded files. So use relevant images only when, they are required.
4.Quality of photo: It is determined by the clarity and details of the image. You may use tools like Fireworks, photoshop, to eliminate unwanted features. You may use thumbnail version of the image that contains link to the larger and higher resolution version of the image. This would help people to see the large version of the image without having the same on the web page. Hence it will help in fast loading of the web page
5.Specify the attributes of image: You have to specify the height and width of the image. As this specification tells the browser to create a specific sized box to hold the graphic. With this, the browser will be loading the rest of web page elements while the downloading of the image is taking place. If you don’t specify, then the browser will take a pause and let the downloading of image to take place first before the web page could load.
6.Remove Unnecessary Information: You need to remove the unnecessary details about the color palette of the image. There is one option i.e. ‘Save for the web’ which eliminate the unnecessary details of the image, hence optimizing the image. Unnecessary details increase the loading time.
Images should enhance the effectiveness of the web page and not lower it by increasing the loading time of the web page. By following all the above tips of image optimization, you can optimize the web page images, thus making your site effective and attractive too.
